If you want to try making your own Animegao Kigurumi mask, a printable 3D mask model is usually one of the first things you need.
MidDreamKigu (formerly KigLover) has kept an older Kigu mask model publicly available so that people interested in Animegao Kigurumi can study the basic structure, practice 3D printing, modify the model, and experiment with DIY production.
This guide combines our previous free-model instructions and beginner DIY tutorial into one practical introduction covering model download, modification, 3D printing, surface preparation, painting, eye design, and common beginner issues.

1. Free Kigu Mask Model Download
The KigLover 2.0 Free Model (Older Version) is currently available for public download on Thingiverse:

This model was developed during the earlier KigLover period and is now kept available as a free resource for Animegao Kigurumi DIY, 3D printing practice, model modification, and structural study.
This free public model is not the model currently used for MidDreamKigu commission orders.
Our current custom commissions use MidDreamKigu 3.0 custom models. Each 3.0 model is created and adjusted specifically around the character reference so that we can better reproduce the character’s facial structure, expression, eyes, and other important features.
The older public model is better treated as a DIY learning and production reference. Using it does not guarantee the same result as a MidDreamKigu 3.0 commission. The final result depends heavily on the maker’s own model adjustments, print quality, sanding, surface preparation, painting, eye work, wig work, and overall production experience.
2. Should You Modify the Model Before Printing?
You can print the public model as provided, or modify it according to the character and project you want to make.
Common changes can include facial proportions, mouth shape, expression, eye openings, character-specific features, internal structure, and adjustments for accessories.
If you already have 3D modeling experience, software such as ZBrush or Blender can be used to make these changes.
For character accuracy, the shape of the base model matters a great deal. This is one reason MidDreamKigu 3.0 commissions do not simply reuse one standard public model: the model is adjusted around the individual character reference.
Be Careful When Resizing the Model
We do not recommend assuming that resizing a Kigu mask is only a matter of scaling the entire model by one percentage value.
Scaling can also affect structural holes, magnet positions, connection dimensions, eye components, and the fit between the front and back shell. After changing the size, always check whether the structural parts still align correctly.
3. Which 3D Printing Method Should You Use?
The printing method has a major influence on the final surface quality of a Kigu mask.
Resin / Light-Curing Printing
If you want a smoother surface and better facial detail, we generally recommend a resin-based light-curing printing method such as SLA or a similar resin process.
A good resin print usually provides finer surface detail and less obvious layer texture, which can reduce some of the later finishing work. This is especially useful for Animegao Kigurumi masks, where facial curves and surface smoothness strongly affect the final appearance.
FDM Printing
If your budget is limited, FDM printing with materials such as PLA or PETG can also be used for practice, prototyping, and lower-cost DIY projects.
However, FDM prints normally show more obvious layer lines and may require significantly more sanding, filling, and surface correction before painting.
FDM can still be used to make a Kigu mask, but the quality of the final result will depend more heavily on the maker’s finishing work.
4. How Thick Should the Mask Shell Be?
The shell thickness needs to balance weight, durability, and structural strength.
For our older free model, approximately 2.5 mm can be used as a basic reference point. The actual thickness should still be adjusted according to the material, printing method, and specific structure.
We do not recommend making the entire shell extremely thin simply to reduce material cost. A shell that is too thin can be more likely to crack, deform, or become damaged during transport and use.
Reference Shell Hardware and Amazon Links
If you are building the older KigLover 2.0 public model, the following dimensions can be used as reference sizes for small opening and closing hardware. Size matters: parts that look similar can have different footprints and mounting-hole positions. If you resize or modify the shell, test the fit before drilling or permanently installing any hardware.

Stainless-steel butt hinge — target size: 25 × 25 mm (1 × 1 in), approximately 0.6 mm thick. One Amazon example with a verified 25 × 25 mm open size is the Piutouyar 1-inch 304 stainless-steel butt hinge. Please confirm the current seller's thickness before ordering, because the indexed product specification does not clearly state 0.6 mm.

Do not assume that a 40 × 27 mm or 50 × 35 mm latch is interchangeable with the 48 × 31 mm reference size without adapting the shell. The same applies to hinges: verify the open dimensions, thickness, and mounting positions before installation.
5. What Should You Do After Printing?
A finished 3D print is normally only the beginning of the production process.
Before painting, the printed parts usually need to be cleaned and prepared. Depending on the printing method, this may include:
- Cleaning the printed parts
- Removing supports
- Checking for print defects
- Sanding uneven areas and layer texture
- Filling gaps, seams, or surface imperfections
- Testing the fit of structural components
- Preparing the surface for paint
Surface preparation is one of the most important parts of the process.
Many beginners focus mainly on painting, but even good paintwork cannot fully hide obvious print lines, pits, seams, or uneven surfaces underneath. Spending more time on preparation usually produces a much cleaner final result.
6. Painting a DIY Kigu Mask
For DIY projects, you can choose paints according to your material, equipment, and experience. Acrylic paints can be useful for basic practice, while model paints are also commonly used for more advanced finishing workflows.
Before painting the final mask, test your colors separately.
Character skin tones can look very different under natural daylight, warm indoor lighting, cool LED lighting, and photography lights. Checking the color under several lighting conditions can help avoid surprises after the mask is completed.
Practice Color Mixing First
Accurately reproducing a character often requires more than using a single ready-made skin color.
You may need to mix colors for skin tone, blush, shadows, lips, and other facial details. Practicing on paper, a test print, or another surface before painting the final mask can reduce unnecessary rework.
7. Eye Design Has a Major Impact on the Final Result
The eyes have a very large influence on how an Animegao Kigurumi mask expresses a character.
Even small changes in iris size, pupil position, highlights, eyelash shape, eye angle, or color saturation can significantly change the expression.
If you are making the eyes yourself, it is useful to prepare several versions and compare them before permanent installation.
Do not judge the eyes only from a very close distance. Kigurumi masks are normally viewed as part of a complete costume, in photography, or at events, so it is also important to check how the eyes and face look from a normal viewing distance.
8. Common Beginner Issues
Some problems are especially common during a first Animegao Kigurumi DIY project:
- Choosing a base model that is too different from the target character. Good painting cannot completely compensate for unsuitable facial proportions.
- Printing before checking the model. Confirm the dimensions, eye openings, structure, and connection points first.
- Making the shell too thin to save material. This can increase the risk of cracking and deformation.
- Underestimating sanding and finishing time. Surface preparation often takes longer than beginners expect.
- Checking colors under only one light source. Important colors should be compared under different lighting conditions.
- Changing the model size without rechecking the structure. Resizing can affect magnets, holes, joints, and shell alignment.
For DIY work, the 3D model is only the starting point. The final appearance is the combined result of the model, printing, surface preparation, painting, eyes, wig work, and the maker’s experience. This is why two people using the same public model can produce very different finished masks.
Community Use, Feedback, and Modifications
Because the KigLover 2.0 model is publicly available, makers have also used it as a base for their own experiments and character modifications.
In an August 2026 discussion on r/kigurumi, one maker described working with the KigLover 2.0 mask base and trying to adjust the eye position to better match a character reference without disrupting the overall layout of the mask. Community suggestions included further 3D-model editing and, after printing, reshaping selected areas using finishing methods such as epoxy clay or sanding.
The original poster later said they had found another approach: modifying the head of a 3D model so that it could be made compatible with the existing back shell.
This is a useful example of how makers may use the public KigLover 2.0 model as part of a broader DIY workflow—reusing its structure, adapting other 3D assets, or combining different modeling approaches depending on the character they want to create.
We think this kind of real-world discussion reflects the best way to approach the public model today: it is a free resource for learning, experimentation, and DIY modification—not a character-perfect commercial model. Being able to adapt the base can be useful for experienced makers, but the final quality still depends heavily on the maker’s modeling choices, printing, finishing, painting, and overall production skill.

The goal is not to turn the free model into a made-to-order character model. Instead, the Discord community gives DIY makers a place to learn from one another, document solutions, and give us clearer feedback about issues that appear in real projects.

10. Who Is the Free Public Model Best For?
The KigLover 2.0 free model can still be a useful learning resource if you want to:
- Try printing a Kigu mask for the first time
- Study basic Kigu mask structure
- Practice modifying a 3D model
- Learn sanding and surface preparation
- Practice painting and eye design
- Better understand how an Animegao Kigurumi mask is produced
If your goal is to reproduce one specific character with high accuracy, an older standard public model will normally require much more modification.
MidDreamKigu’s current 3.0 custom commissions use a different commercial workflow in which the model is created and adjusted around the specific character instead of simply using the older public model.
11. DIY or Custom Commission?
Making an Animegao Kigurumi mask yourself can be a rewarding project if you enjoy 3D modeling, printing, sanding, painting, wig work, and hands-on experimentation.
Starting with a free model can also help you understand how different parts of the production process work together.
However, DIY usually requires more time, equipment, materials, and trial and error than beginners initially expect. Failed prints, surface problems, incorrect colors, and structural adjustments are all normal parts of learning.
If your priority is the final character result rather than learning the full production process yourself, a custom commission may be more suitable.
MidDreamKigu 3.0 commissions use character-specific modeling and combine that model with the later production stages, including printing, surface finishing, mask art, eye work, wig styling, and other customization required for the character.
Final Thoughts
Animegao Kigurumi DIY does not need to begin with a very complicated project.
A practical way to start is to download a public model, study the structure, try printing it, and gradually learn modification, sanding, painting, and finishing.
As you gain experience, it becomes easier to see that the 3D model alone does not determine the final quality of a Kigu mask. The result comes from the entire production process working together.
